Harbour Times was an independent digital news outlet covering current affairs in Hong Kong. Projects include its morning news briefing, High Tide, and podcast series, Spyglass.

As the Editor-in-Chief I was responsible for developing content and marketing strategies, producing cross-platform content, and leading a remote global team.

Newsletter

High Tide was a daily newsletter with over 1,500 subscribers. It provided its readers with a quick and informative way to digest Hong Kong's latest affairs. The newsletter's paid subscribers also received exclusive intelligence on HK's cutting-edge industries and diplomatic circles.

  • As of November 2021, the newsletter grew 10%+ in readership since its migration from Mailchimp to Substack.

  • Substack subscriber-based funding increased from US$0 to $1,000 ARR between 2021 and 2022.

“The light-touch, often ironic, but at the same time also serious and straight to the point tone of news that you deliver to us in the form of High Tide has made my day already a couple of times.”

— Aleksander Dańda, Consul-General of Poland in Hong Kong

The Harbour Times website is powered by WordPress. My colleague and I have worked closely with a designer to update the site's UI and UX design to align our rebranding and compete in the contemporary media landscape. You can see its transformation over the years in this Instagram reel.

  • The site experienced a 250%+ growth in visits year-on-year in November 2021.

Social Media

Since my tenure at Harbour Times, I have dedicated significant focus to revamping its social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. As of 2021 HT recruited two social media and digital marketing specialists to the team to contribute to the steady growth of its platforms.

  • Digital community: 10,000+

  • Audience: Consulate Generals and Foreign Diplomats, Government Departments, Social Activists, Expats, Lifestyle influencers and leaders

Podcast

Spyglass is a podcast that takes a closer look at Hong Kong. Guests on the show have included Frances Hui, the first Hong Kong pro-democracy activist to receive US asylum, and former Consulate General of Germany to Hong Kong Dieter Lamle.
